First Amendment Legacy Grants

The James B. McClatchy Foundation has always supported two key organizations that James loved. These ongoing operational supporting grants will continue to honor James’ legacy.

    • First Amendment Coalition
      • The Foundation has provided annual operating support to this award-winning, nonprofit public interest organization dedicated to advancing free speech, open government and public participation in civic affairs. In 2019, FAC was recipient of the Free Speech and Open Government Award for their push for law enforcement accountability. They were also presented with the 2020 James Madison Freedom of Information Award by the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
    • Committee to Protect Journalists
      • The Committee to Protect Journalists is an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes press freedom worldwide. They defend the right of journalists to report the news safely and without fear of reprisal. Track their work in a recent review about attacks on the press.

First Amendment

Initiative

In its exploratory phase to embark on a major First Amendment strategy, the James B. McClatchy Foundation launched the LIFT Initiative as a grant making pilot to advance awareness of and engagement with the First Amendment as it relates to free speech, freedom of expression, and a free press in Central Valley communities.

Through a listening journey with communities, we partner with Central Valley organizations to uncover the core support needed to engage in First Amendment freedoms and sustain a vibrant civic life. What surfaced is a vivid civic engagement ecosystem of connected partners ranging from community organizers, civic educators and journalists to First Amendment advocates. Collectively, they create a blueprint for how to successfully uplift the First Amendment in the Central Valley. As the LIFT pilot evolves into a longer-term strategy, we embrace opportunities to safeguard local news and amplify community voices that represent the future of the Central Valley.
