James B. McClatchy’s Foundation’s “All in for Central Valley Democracy” marks a transformative chapter in our Sunrise Plan. Centered on a multiracial democracy, inclusive leadership, and community-powered local journalism, our initiative targets the Central Valley—a region lacking philanthropic attention but vital to California’s future.

Since launching in January 2024, nearly $2 million has been moved across 45 grantees, thanks to the support of funders like the California Healthcare Foundation, The California Endowment, the Stuart Foundation, Sobrato Philanthropies, and more. The fund moved resources directly to local community leaders to protect and prepare communities to be part of an inclusive and engaged democracy in 2024. The fund prioritized two main areas:

Activating the Free Press: Grants will strengthen local media outlets, storytelling and narrative change, fact-checking, and promoting media literacy. Civic engagement is directly correlated to consumption of local news. Without a robust local news infrastructure in the Valley, residents are left with national news sites and social media that often provides mis- and disinformation. Independent media organizations ensure that communities have access to unbiased, credible information in the home languages of residents.

Funding Grassroots Nonprofits: Investing directly in diverse, frontline leaders to build a powerful civic engagement and nonprofit leadership infrastructure. Youth-serving, family and parent, and civic engagement organizations are established trusted entities for community voice and civic engagement.
